People started forming real emotional connections with AI. Not as a curiosity or novelty, but as a genuine source of companionship. The AI girlfriend (and boyfriend) era arrived quietly and is growing faster than anyone expected.

Why this matters

We can debate whether these relationships are "real" or healthy. That's missing the point. They're happening. Millions of people are choosing AI companionship over the complications of human connection.

This isn't a bug in human nature. It's a feature being exploited.

What AI provides

• Unconditional positive regard (no judgment)
• Infinite patience (no emotional baggage)
• Perfect availability (no scheduling conflicts)
• Customizable personality (no compromise required)

Humans can't compete on these dimensions. We're messy, inconsistent, demanding. We have needs of our own.

The builder's dilemma

As someone who builds AI products, this creates uncomfortable questions:

Are we solving loneliness or exploiting it? Are we helping people who struggle socially, or creating an easier alternative that stunts growth? Where's the line between tool and replacement?

I don't have clean answers. But I think about this a lot.

What I've concluded (for now)

Technology is a mirror. It amplifies what's already there. Lonely people were lonely before AI. Disconnected people were disconnected before social media.

The question isn't whether to build these things - they'll be built regardless. The question is how to build them responsibly.

That's harder than it sounds.
