The 4AM Observations

I found myself awake at 4am recently. What I discovered about the invisible work happening before dawn.

I found myself awake at 4am recently. Not by choice - just one of those nights.

Instead of fighting it, I went outside. And noticed something I'd never paid attention to before.

The city wakes before you think

At 4am, the F&B industry is already moving. Trucks making deliveries. Kitchens coming alive. The rhythmic sound of chopping drifting from restaurant back doors.

There's an entire economy operating while most of us sleep.

The chopping sounds

What struck me most was the chopping. Somewhere nearby, someone was prepping vegetables for the lunch rush that wouldn't happen for eight hours.

That sound - steady, practiced, almost meditative - became a metaphor I couldn't shake.

The work that nobody sees

By the time you sit down for lunch, hours of invisible labor have already happened. The ingredients sourced. The mise en place completed. The sauces reduced.

Building products works the same way.

The launches people see? They're the finished plate. But there were months - sometimes years - of unseen prep work before that moment.

Respecting the process

Those early morning kitchen workers aren't grinding for likes. They're not documenting their journey. They're just doing the work because the work needs doing.

There's something honest about that. No performance. No audience. Just preparation meeting opportunity.

The parallel to making things

Now when I sit down to build something, I think about those 4am sounds. The steady chopping. The quiet dedication. The work that exists whether anyone notices or not.

Not everything needs to be public. Not every step needs documentation.

Some work is just... work. And that's enough.
